    Get PDF
The purpose of the present study was to propose a model for mathematics achievement considering the mediating role of eye tracking measurements in the relationship between problem solving performance and mathematics achievement. In this sequential explanatory mixed method research design, a geometry test was conducted to 381 7th grade students. Their problem-solving process was recorded using eye tracking technology. Also, their mathematics achievement scores were acquired from their schools. Afterwards, semi-structured interviews were conducted to 15 students. Based on the results, it was observed that there was a positive relationship among problem-solving performance and mathematics achievement while eye tracking measurements were negatively correlated to problem solving performance and mathematics achievement. Qualitative findings also confirmed these results. Moreover, the hypothesized model could approximately express 22% of the variance on mathematics achievement

The purpose of this study is to investigate students' mathematical understanding of patterns. Three 7th grade students who enrolled in a public school solved the questions regarding the patterns. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with them about their solutions. The data were analyzed by using the Pirie-Kieren theory of mathematical understanding. The findings of this study revealed that students' mathematical understanding varied between first six levels from primitive knowing to observing and their mathematical understanding mostly occurred between Image Making and Formalising layers. In terms of theory, students were able to pass the first and second "Don't Need" boundaries but they could not progress their understanding over the third "Don't Need" boundary. The results also illustrated that all of the students had knowledge about the patterns. In order to find the general rule of the pattern, they mostly endeavored to determine a formula and check its correctness by writing initial three steps

This study was conducted to reveal potential sources of students' difficulty and misconceptions about geometrical concepts with the help of eye tracking. In this study, the students' geometrical misconceptions were explored by answering the questions on the geometry test prepared based on the literature and test-taking processes and represented with the help of eye tracking data to make interpretations about their visual and cognitive attention. With this aim, the mixed method research design was used. The data were collected through the geometry test, eye tracking measurements, and the think aloud strategy. Geometry test scores were represented by descriptive statistics such as percentage. The quantitative eye tracking data were analysed by Kruskal-Wallis tests and Mann-Whitney U-tests among the choices for each question. The qualitative data collected through the think aloud strategy were analysed by the content analysis. In the findings, the students' geometrical misconceptions were examined and reported in detail from a different perspective with the help of data related to eye tracking. Then, eye tracking data and qualitative data showed the geometry misconception items on which the students had difficulty and cognitive conflict in addition to geometrical misconception based on the students' answers to the geometry questions

    No full text
Background/aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the distribution, sources, clinical features, and mortality rates of bacteremia due to evaluation of extensively drug-resistant (XDR) gram negative among solid-organ transplant (SOT) recipients. Materials and methods: A retrospective study of SOT recipients with bacteremia due to XDR gram-negative pathogens in 11 centers between 2016 and 2018 was conducted. Patients' records were evaluated. Results: Of 171 bacteremia that occurred in 164 SOT recipients, 93 (56.7%) were liver, 46 (28%) kidney, 14 (8.5%) heart, and 11 (6.7%) lung recipients. Bacteremia episodes were recorded in the first year in 63.7% of the patients (n = 109), early-onset bacteremia was recorded in 45% (n = 77) of the episodes. In multivariate analysis, catheter-associated bacteremia was an independent risk factor for 7-day mortality (p = 0.037), and early-onset bacteremia was found as an independent risk factor for 30-day mortality (p = 0.017). Conclusion: Difficult-to-treat infections due to XDR bacteria in SOT recipients shadow the success of transplantation. Central venous catheters seem to be the main risk factor. Judicious use of medical devices is of pivotal importance
